Interlinear NIV Hebrew-English Old Testament, The

Average rating: Stars
Stars Clear print, not literal interlinear translation
I bought first 'The Interlinear Bible Hewbrew-Greek-English' by Green, but the print was too small and it was difficult to discern the vowels, so I had to try KOhlenberger instead. The print is clear and readable, especially with a looking-glass, so I am satisfied. Having used the book for a while, while learning Hebrew, I cannot see any deficiences, except maybe that the interlinear portion seems to be influenced by the margin translation, so that I cannot be sure that the translation under the word is the most literal.

For instance in the margin: 'These are the names of the sons of Israel who entered Egypt with Jacob, each with his family...'

In the text 'ish' = 'each'; 'uveto' = with family of him.
This is helpful, but as a student of the language I would have preferred the most literal translation.

Otherwise I am satisfied.

Stars Still Need Other Basics of Hebrew
This really helped on places that didn't add up, that seemed wrong or where the footnotes in the NIV were better when the whole OLD and NEW Testaments were considered together (the testament of salvation).

There have been some places where I am totally amazed at how NIV came up with what they did (again taking 20/20 hindsight into account - not saying I could've done better on a first pass).

Even if you read some previous reviews or the introduction you may think NIV was used period. That's not the case. He defends NIV (so he can be published? - they're the scholars... blah, blah).

You'll be amazed that in Hebrew, masculine and feminine tenses exist (like Spanish) and what ends up with she's (over and over again). I can see how English defaulted to masculine when gender is not known (proper English).

I've found where NIV translated wrong in English some Psalms based on Basics of Biblical Hebrew (book), this interlinear, some knowledge of Jewish customs and the NIV. Woe! A play on words, meaning and word order - that they flat-out just missed?

Anyone who wants the truth surely needs knowledge.

I think I'm really in for a tilt when I break into the different meanings of words (just like in any English Dictionary so too Hebrew must be, including puns, sarcasm, et cetera - e.g. gay two different meanings for two different generations) it's going to really make me ponder the seriousness of Bible publishers (but any introduction is better than none). Jesus, didn't say to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees for nothing (this would be applied to these poor scholars with this huge task - probably needs reviewing and adjusting).

You study the bible? Yes? Then it is time to study this Hebrew too (at least as a cross-reference when something seems off). Seek and you will find.

The NIV is the best that I can find on the Old Testament and curtain footnotes in the NIV harmonize the New Testament better than the chosen NIV main. I couldn't imagine how they mucked up the latest NIV (modern?) for neutral genders. Not Hebrew whatsoever, which means not even worthy of studying unless you want to be lost forever.
